Loving Neon

I am LOVING neon at the moment, for once fashion agrees with me, Yay!
It all started for me summer before last with a cut work River Island clutch bag, and ever since then my neon love has just been growing.

Here is my pick of the best of the High Street neon goodies, the Newlook necklace... I bought it in two colours... well it was buy one get one free, would have been rude not to.

Declutter your life - Part Two

Last Thursday I took you through how to start a de-clutter in your life and I promised that this week would give you some hints and tips for all that stuff you now have bagged up.  Hopefully will have a good few bags full like these ones of mine!

For everything you have bundles up ready to go, you have a few options:

Take to your local Charity shop, I like to alternate between a local charity and a more national one for my bags of goodies.  My local shop even gives me a card so that they can gift aid and they let me know how much my stuff has made each year.  Nice to know it's going to a good home and it's giving the charity some much needed funds.

The good condition items (including items still with tags) could go on ebay or taken to a car boot sale to make some extra cash.  I have found I get much better results with brand names or items that have not been worn much, if at all.

You could see if you can customise anything - perhaps you would wear it if it was shorter/longer or less faded.  This is where a sewing machine or some clothing dye would come in handy.  You could add some extra material to the bottom of a dress or make your Jeans into cut-offs or a skirt perhaps.

You can take beads off of the jewellery, use the findings again and make new necklaces or earrings.  Just because it doesn't work as one piece of jewellery doesn't mean it won't work for something else.  I love taking apart necklaces and making earrings or brooches, especially ones I have no use for anymore or the ones you find in car boots.  As I mentioned before I have to be picky with my jewellery as I am allergic to nickel, so If I love something, I can always make it into something else!

Your Jewellery could be sent away to a worthwhile cause for recycling - they take broken jewellery too so don't woryy about that.  A few I have sent to include The Alzheimers SocietyDiabetes UK and Marie Curie, all information can be found on their websites.

There are even places you can send your good condition old bra's too!  Don't throw them away, send them to Against Breast Cancer or Oxfam, more details can be found on there websites.  They are both very worthwhile causes and mean that someone out there has the benefit of something you no longer need and we all know they are going to end up in landfill otherwise.

Plenty of options for all that stuff you had before, that could now have a new lease of life, either with someone else or from what your imagination can do with it!

Who's who: Miss Maker

This month's Who's who comes courtesy of the lovely Miss Maker.  H has seen her little place in Hampshire on her travels back to the homelands and so thought it would be nice to share her with the rest of you.

Who are you?

Clare Blackmore-Davies, wife to the lovely John, mum to the adorable Finn, and around all that Miss Maker - prolific crafter and excitable sewing tutor.

What do you do?

Provide fun one day courses, well-earned sewing escapes and one to one sewing tuition for North Hampshire and beyond. I compliment this with a little online shop stocking products I use in my courses and my own kits and patterns.

How did you start?

I was bought my first sewing machine at seven by my grandmother who was a skilled seamstress. I spent many happy hours with her as she taught me everything she knew, I continued to read up on techniques and experiment with textiles, learning all the time and keeping sewing close to my heart throughout school, university, a 'normal' career and starting a family - the stars all aligned in Dec 2010 when I was able to take voluntary redundancy and launch Miss Maker.

Whats Next?

Keep up with demand, grow steadily, make plans…..

What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to the beginning?

To the 7 year old me - ask more questions and write more notes,
To the 18 year old me - study more, sew less,
To the 36 year old me - sew more, work less :o)

We think Miss Maker is on track to achieve her dreams and if this lovely little tractor rucksack is anything to go by, I think quite a lot of children will be getting Miss Maker products too!

Live it.  Love it.  Make it

Love it, Make it.....String Art

I have been crushing on these string art pieces for a while now, the technique uses small nails and string weaved back and forth to create an image. I particularly like these U.S. State ones with the little heart in the area of the state where you are from or where you live.

Of course I live in the UK, so I thought I would have a go at doing my own version with a map of the United Kingdom. Whilst I was painstakingly pushing nails in to foam-board I had an idea to do a set of three using three different techniques. I ended up doing one in thread, one in fabric and one in paper. Don't they look cute! I have put them  pride of place on the bookcase on our landing.
I love how they look al together. Three is my lucky number, so I always like things in groups like this.

I started by printing off an image of the UK map that I then traced on to tissue paper.
For the thread version I laid it over two sheets of black foam-board, and pushed the nails in through the tissue paper and board together. When I had finished pushing the nails in all the way around, I gently tore away the tissue paper to leave just the nails in place. Then I took a reel of white thread and started winding back and forth from the nails.

It was super tricky to thread the cotton back and forth without nudging the nails out of place and the thread kept coming un-hooked from the nails, but I finally got it reasonably neat, and really satisfying to see it grow as I worked.

The second one I made was far easier, I just took my copy and rubbed pencil lead over the back of it then traced down onto three pages from an old book which I had stuck together with washi tape at the back. Once I had traced the map onto the pages I cut it out with scissors and glued it down to a blank sheet of card. I found the little red heart embellishment in my stash.

I used the same technique for the fabric version too. Except I traced a little outside the lines so that my stitching would be more accurate to the coast line.  Once I had traced it, I cut it out with my fabric scissors and sprayed the back with fabric adhesive to hold it in place whilst I stitched it to the calico I was mounting it on with embroidery thread. For the heart I cut a small piece of red fabric and stitched it in place.

I had great fun creating these and they look lovely on our landing. I ended up getting the frames on three for two at Wilkinsons, they are great for low cost frames.

Have you ever had a go at string art? If you have or if you give it a try, send us a picture, we would love to see what you create!

Link for the week: V&A fabric

I love love love the V&A and their fabrics they have in their online shop are to die for!

They tend to bring out a new set of patterns for the seasons and I love to check out what's new, although I tend to go a little mad and then have to curb what's in my shopping basket - even in the half price Sale time they have.

So, this weeks link is to the V&A online shop for their new Spring/Summer selection.

I'll see you in the virtual queue!

#FashionTargetsBreastCancer

You may have noticed our newest addition to the blog, the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer banner, If you click on it it will take you through to Breakthrough Breast cancers 'Wear your Support' page where you can find out about all about their latest campaign.
I have always loved this charities selection of fashion fundraising products, they have their finger firmly on the fashion pulse, and always seem to pull off on trend pieces that aren't too in your face 'charity'.
This year they have done another stellar job with the help of some of our favourite high street stores of creating a collection of super wearable pieces.
These are my favourites that I will be adding to my summer wardrobe, whilst feeling very smug  that 30% of the cost is going to help this Fantastic charity.

I love the summery tie dye towel, great for our holiday, and that Warehouse feather top is gorgeous! My top pick though has to be the Laura Ashley stripe dress, beautiful!

Check out the whole collection on their website, there are all the usual ways to follow all the news from Fashion Targets Breast cancer, don't forget to #WearYourSupport
''2013 is the year Fashion Targets Breast Cancer focuses on unity. Together we are stronger and this year’s campaign will see us unite mothers and daughters with leading high street and online retailers to encourage you to Wear Your Support.
This year’s campaign is fronted by two of the world’s most famous mother and daughter duos, Sharon and Kelly Osbourne and Pearl and Daisy Lowe, conveying strength, support and unity against breast cancer.
The range is full of exclusive pieces that can be teamed up for any occasion throughout the Great British seasons: day or night, home or away, rain or shine. Whatever your age, whatever your style, whatever your budget, there is something for you to wear with pride and get involved.
Fashion Targets Breast Cancer is the UK’s leading charity fashion campaign. Now in its seventeenth year, the campaign raises vital money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
